Why your brain forgets the front door
You've done it a hundred times. You lock the door, walk to the car, and somewhere around the third step a cold little voice asks: did you actually lock it? You did. Probably. But the memory is already gone — not because you're careless, but because of how your brain handles routine actions.
The object-permanence trap
Babies learn object permanence around eight months: the idea that things still exist when you can't see them. For ADHD brains, a related glitch shows up with actions rather than objects. Once the door is behind you and out of sight, the proof that you locked it doesn't stick. The action was automatic, so it never got encoded as a distinct memory.
Why willpower doesn't fix it
The usual advice — "just pay more attention" — misunderstands the problem. You can't will yourself into encoding a memory that your brain has already decided is unremarkable. What works instead is giving the action an external anchor: a deliberate, slightly novel moment that your brain does record.
- Say it out loud — "door locked" — to add an auditory trace.
- Make a physical gesture you don't normally make.
- Log it somewhere you can check later, so the proof outlives the memory.
How Routina uses this
